Communities We Serve

Visitors

Anarchestra offers visitors access to one of the largest works of outsider musicianship of the last half century. Our collection of over 150 custom made and unique instruments are fully interactive and we encourage visitors to actively participate in making music with them.

Students

Anarchestra provides a unique opportunity to blend both arts and STEM education. In addition to the obvious avenues for learning about music performance and aesthetics, the fact that the instruments were entirely designed and constructed by Andy Thurlow (from welding and electronics to tuning) gives students the chance to explore STEM fields including acoustics, mechanics, and electrical engineering.

Musicians

Anarchestra gives musicians both in the immediate community and beyond a broad range of new sounds to add to their work. Musicians are welcome to incorporate the Anarchestra instruments into works of their own, or even record works consisting solely of the Anarchestra instruments. Recording sessions can be organized outside of the normal operating hours for groups that want to have uninterrupted time with the instruments.

Arts Community

Anarchestra has an important role to play in the broader arts community. Small sets of the instruments can be loaned (either temporarily or permanently) to partner organizations that would like to exhibit them. In addition, Anarchestra can partner with rotating exhibits from other artists, particularly wall-hung visual art as none of the Anarchestra instruments require wall space. The space can also accommodate gatherings and concerts, which would be welcome to incorporate the instruments into their events.

Makers and Tinkerers

Anarchestra offers a space for experimentation with both sound and engineering. Creators are welcome to use the instruments for inspiration in their own designs. We also offer numerous educational resources including literature on instrument making, music, and engineering, and can potentially offer workshops for interested parties.
